The Duo replaces the Uno’s gorgeously retro tuning dial with an analog clock and, like most alarms operating on a 12-hour clock, it goes off twice a day unless reset. This means you must remember to activate the alarm every night (just like in the old days) but the process is so simple – press one button – that it’s hardly a hassle.
The alarm is a beeper that becomes increasingly insistent until it gives up and restarts the rising process again. There’s a snooze button you can’t miss and a sleep function so you can be gentled to your slumber with music. The tuning wheel is smoothly geared and all the controls are simple, elegant, intuitive and highly tactile.
The Tangent not only looks and feels good but the sound quality is rich and lustrous. If we were being picky, we’d say it was weighted a little too far towards the bass end, but most people seem to like that. Unless you’re a classical purist, it’s not likely to upset you.
One thing to watch: while the radio runs on mains power, the clock is powered independently by a single AA battery. There’s an auxiliary input for a portable at the back, along with a headphone plug.
It’s available in red.
